Jesus entrusted his followers the responsibility of caring for others. One way that Catholics fulfill this responsibility is by performing the Works of Mercy.
Mercy is one of the fruits of charity, which enables us to show love and compassion to those who are suffering in mind, body, heart or soul.
The Works of Mercy are divided into two categories:
Action Ministry
“We provide food and household grocery items to over 1,000 families each month. Many of the families coming to us never had to ask for assistance before, but are being forced to now because of unexpected job losses. As we are able, we also share items which have been donated to us with other small agencies in the area. Above all that we do to help provide for the physical needs of our clients, we strive to make it abundantly clear that we are there to show God’s love and concern for them. Each morning, the volunteers and clients begin the day with prayer. Reading material and pictures in the waiting area make it evident that we are a Christian organization. We don’t discriminate against anyone based on their religious beliefs, but we hope that they will be clear about ours.”
Be Concerned
Be Concerned — The People’s Pantry — is the largest free food program in Northern Kentucky. In 2020, it served 6,746 people in 2,918 distinct households, both records. We maintain our traditional reliance on volunteers, who enable our programs to run at a third of the cost if we were paid staff only. We retain the choice model that Sr. Donna Kinney started more than a half century ago, with volunteers and staff alike upholding the mantra that remains today – just as important as what we give our shoppers is how we give it: with a smile, a hug, an encouraging word.

We do our best to combat these by treating everyone entering Henry Hosea House as if they were dining in a fine restaurant, meeting with friends, and building community.”

“Since 1974, Parish Kitchen has served a free lunch every day in Covington to anyone who is hungry. What started at Mother of God Church, soon moved to the corner of Pike and Russell, where we served every day for many years. We welcome anyone who enters our doors between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. for a delicious, wholesome meal and a respite from the elements. We treat everyone with Dignity, Respect, Affection, Attention and Hospitality, our guiding principles.”

There are many people locally and globally who go without food and do not have access to clean water. We can support the efforts of those working towards greater accessibility of these essential resources.
There are many circumstances that could lead to someone becoming a person without a home. Christ encourages us to go out and meet those without homes, affirming their worth and helping them seek a resolution to the challenges they face.

“The CARE Closet is a truly unique and special experience. We are the first not for profit kids clothing closet in Kentucky that allows kids to “shop.” We operate at no cost to the families. The CARE Closet’s mission is about dignity. The kids absolutely light up with huge smiles when they come to “shop.” For many this is the first time they have actually been able to shop for their own clothes. We collaborate with schools but are independent from the family resource coordinators. The children “shop” for items they need, including tops, bottoms, underwear, socks, shoes, coats, books and personal hygiene. We support families that are living below poverty, homeless and transient. Not only are the kids getting clean clothes, they gain hope, self-esteem and feel loved.”

Do not be bitter about wrongs done against you. Place your hope in God so that you can endure the troubles of this world and face them with a compassionate spirit.
Forgiving others is difficult at times because we do not have God’s limitless mercy and compassion. But Jesus teaches us that we should forgive as God forgives, relying on him to help us show others the mercy of God.

Walking With Moms In Need
“Walking with Moms in Need is a nationwide, parish-based initiative to increase support for pregnant and parenting mothers in need. It works to ensure that any woman who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant, or parenting in difficult circumstances, can turn to her local Catholic Church and be connected with the resources she needs. Volunteers walk with moms throughout the motherhood journey, offering them authentic Christian friendship and ongoing support.”
